Capturing Grimson’s “Little Prayer” at Famous Gold Watch

Recorded at the Famous Gold Watch, Berlin based artist Grimson sits with an electric guitar, cycling through meditative verses of his song “Little Prayer” while a single piano note keeps time like a pulse, creating both atmosphere and tension.

Armed with Aim microphones, engineer Bob Spencer carefully crafted his sonic approach to enhance without imposing on the intentionally sparse arrangement.

For vocals, an INSPIRE set to reverse cardioid mode allowed Bob to dial in the mic settings from the front panel while Grimson focused on his performance from the back of the capsule.

Mounted in ORBIT, our custom 190° rotating shock mount made it easy for Bob to carefully position the mic to catch all the intimate details of the performance while SENTRY, our reversible magnetic pop filter, controlled any incoming plosives.

Switching to the Transformer balanced output mode brought out some gentle low-end weight and subtle air to Aidan’s voice, complementing his natural tone and from there was fed into a Focusrite ISA 430 MkII.

For guitar, the amp received the classic condenser + dynamic treatment. Blending the body and smooth transients of INSPIRE’s Transformer output with the classic bite of an SM57, both routed through Neve 1073 preamps, yielded a full-frequency recording with flexibility in the mix to balance warmth against presence based on what each section demanded.

Piano was captured simply with a single INSPIRE positioned over the sole C# note repeated throughout the performance, providing both a harmonic foundation and rhythmic anchor for the song. Routed through a Cranborne Audio Camden 500, the signal remained untouched, letting the piano’s natural character speak.

The mix added generous reverb, extending the boundaries of the room into something more expansive and atmospheric. The result: a recording that feels spacious and meditative, where silence and decay are as important as the notes themselves.
