Kiki Annette and Fabio Buemi Capture Raw Emotion at Blackbird Studios

Berlin based artist Kiki Annette’s music lies somewhere between indie rock, film scores and poetic confessional with an emphasis on the theatrical.

We teamed up with renowned Berlin producer Fabio Buemi to capture Kiki’s distinct songwriting style with a pair of Aim Audio INSPIRE studio microphones at Fabio’s space within Blackbird Studios.

INSPIRE was able to adapt to Fabio’s needs in real time. The BACK polar pattern orientation mode was perfect here to allow Fabio to easier select and see exactly what settings the mic was set to.

Switching between Transformer and Electronic (FET) output modes for both guitar and vocals also allowed the mic to fit the performance right at source.

In the case of “Somebody’s Daughter,” the Transformer output was chosen for both microphones, to best fit the song, guitar finger picking style and Kiki’s voice and the 110 Hz gentle roll-of tightened everything up nicely on the vocals.

For “Arrows” Fabio again chose the Transformer mode for Kiki’s vocals for the subtle weight and sparkle it added. For guitar, a beautiful 1960s Martin parlour acoustic, the Electronically balanced mode perfectly captured the transients of the strumming pattern, resulting in a clear and articulate recording.
